Stop Hustling for a Seat at a Table You Don’t Even Want to Sit At

We’ve all been there—grinding through the long hours, perfecting the presentation, smoothing over conflicts with just the right amount of diplomacy. And for what? So you can finally be seen. Finally be invited. Finally be chosen.

Chosen for the promotion. Chosen for the leadership program. Chosen to sit at the table where the “important” decisions are made.

But here’s the raw, unspoken truth most people won’t admit out loud: by the time you’re finally offered that coveted seat… you’re already exhausted, disillusioned, and quietly wondering why you even wanted it in the first place.

The table doesn’t look the way you imagined. The people seated around it aren’t visionaries—they’re often tired, bitter, clinging to outdated ideas and playing a political game they don’t even enjoy anymore. And the so-called power that comes with sitting there? It feels less like freedom and more like golden handcuffs dressed up in fancy titles and a slightly better office view.

Yet, despite this creeping realization, so many of us keep hustling toward that table like it’s the final boss level in the game of life.

Why?

Because we’ve been conditioned to believe that this is the definition of success. That if you’re not elbowing your way into boardrooms or exclusive circles, you’re falling behind. That happiness is found through recognition in spaces you were never really invited to join—at least, not as your full, authentic self.

We keep contorting ourselves to fit through doors that were never designed for us, playing roles that slowly erode our sense of identity. We convince ourselves that if we just work harder, speak softer, or play a little more political chess, we’ll eventually be rewarded.

But rewarded with what, exactly?

A life that looks impressive on paper but feels hollow in practice? A bigger paycheck that only serves to buy momentary distractions from the emptiness? A title that forces you to trade creative freedom for corporate obligations?

At some point, you have to step back and ask the question that will change everything: What kind of table am I fighting for a seat at? And do I even like what’s being served there?

Because there’s a secret they don’t want you to figure out—you can build your own table.

You can gather people who challenge you to grow in ways that don’t require sacrificing your soul. You can build work that feeds your passion instead of just your bank account. You can create a life where the measure of success isn’t how many doors you’ve managed to squeeze through, but how many doors you’ve opened for yourself and others.

This isn’t about abandoning ambition; it’s about redefining it. It’s about realizing that sometimes the hustle is a trap, a never-ending treadmill designed to keep you too busy to ask the most important question of all: Is this even the life I want?

The most radical thing you can do in a world obsessed with chasing titles and validation is to stop, turn around, and walk away from the table entirely. Take your brilliance, your vision, and your unapologetic self somewhere else—somewhere wide open, where you don’t have to shrink to fit in.

And if that place doesn’t exist yet? Good.

That means it’s waiting for you to create it.
